Senior actor, filmmaker and playwright Girish Karnad passed away today at 6:30 AM at his residence in Bangalore due to multiple organ failure. He was 81. Girish Karnad was survived by wife Saraswathi, son Raghu Karnad, a journalist and writer and daughter Radha, a doctor based in Kenya.
Girish Karnad predominantly worked in South Indian cinema and Bollywood. He rose to fame with his coming of age of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honor conferred in India. He was also conferred the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, and had won several accolades for direction in Kannada cinema.
Girish Karnad starred in several Telugu films such as Dharma Chakram, Shankar Dada MBBS, Komaram Puli etc. He was last seen in Bollywood film Tiger Zinda Hai.
